A useful step-up starts with a choice. The goal is for your parrot to approach a stable hand or perch willingly, not to be pushed off a branch. Work in a quiet place and stop before either of you becomes frustrated.
Prepare the easy version
Choose a perch your bird already accepts and a small reward it enjoys. Present the perch at a comfortable distance. Reward a glance, lean or single step toward it. You can move the perch closer over several short sessions as the bird becomes confident.
- Reward calm attention to the perch.
- Reward moving toward it.
- Reward one foot, then two feet, on the perch.
- Practise a calm return to a familiar surface.
Watch for the bird’s answer
If your bird leans away, stiffens or repeatedly leaves, make the next step easier and give space. Keep sessions brief and end on a comfortable response. Our body language guide explains why context matters when reading these signals.
Use the skill in daily life
Once a perch step-up is reliable, you can gradually practise in other familiar places and later introduce a hand if the bird is comfortable. Reward the behavior you want to see again. Visit the Training hub for the wider learning path.
