The safest feeding habit is to check an unfamiliar ingredient before it reaches the bowl. Human snacks, drinks and kitchen scraps are not automatically suitable for parrots. If you suspect exposure to a harmful food, contact an avian veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for symptoms.
Keep known hazards out of reach
Avocado, chocolate, alcohol, caffeinated drinks and onion are examples of foods or drinks to keep away from pet birds. Remove apple seeds and fruit pits as well. Avoid sharing salty, highly processed foods. The risk depends on the substance and amount, so a list cannot replace a veterinarian’s advice about an actual exposure.
- Move the food out of reach and note exactly what it was.
- Record the possible amount and the approximate time.
- Call an avian veterinarian or an animal poison service promptly.
- Do not induce vomiting or try a home remedy unless a professional instructs you.
Prevent repeat exposures
Keep a bird-safe food list near the kitchen and ask everyone in the home not to offer unapproved treats. Store drinks and snacks away from play areas. Use the safe fruits guide for a more useful alternative and the Food & Nutrition hub for a complete feeding overview.
