Macaws are large, active parrots. Their size is only one part of planning care: vocalization, strong beaks, movement and a long commitment all shape daily life. Research the particular species and individual before deciding whether your home can meet those needs.
Make room for movement
Choose secure housing that allows comfortable movement and wing extension, with appropriately sized perches and sturdy, bird-safe activities. A supervised play area adds variety outside the cage. Read the housing guide for a setup checklist.
Give the bird ways to participate
Offer foraging and choice-based training in short sessions. Watch posture and activity to learn when the bird wants space. Rotate enrichment with care rather than replacing every familiar item at once.
- Plan for noise and daily supervised interaction.
- Find an avian veterinarian.
- Budget for safe housing, food and ongoing care.
